A little girl grabs her brother with excitement as Blythswood shoeboxes are delivered to their village home in southwestern Ukraine, near the border with Slovakia. “The family live in one room which is cold and dirty,” says Tanya Shpygunova who visited them on 8 January, the day after Christmas by the Orthodox Church calendar. “The children were so excited about the presents. They really liked the toys, colouring books and pencils.”
Nearly 5,000 boxes from Blythswood’s 2018 Shoe Box Appeal were distributed in Ukraine, going to low-income families, people with disabilities and special needs, hospital patients, residents of a rehab centre, school children and people displaced from their homes in eastern Ukraine.
