Just eight months at Talita Kum have started to get Simona’s education back on track. When the ten-year-old joined Blythswood’s after-school programme in May she was at a severe disadvantage in school.
“She is behind with practically everything,” says Talita Kum director Adrian Popa. “Her family are unable to give her the educational support she needs.”
Adrian identifies Simona’s non-attendance at nursery as one disadvantage that subsequently has held her back. In Romania, children from the poorest homes often miss out on this important start.
“By the time she joined our programme it was inevitable that she would have to repeat year two,” he says. “We accepted her before the summer holiday so that she would get settled and work better in September.
“Our teachers give her lots of one-to-one attention and I am hopeful that she will make the grade this year.”
